Sips for a Steal

Classy Cocktails for the Pinched Pocketbook

Kerplunk! A perfect ice cube lands in the glass, causing the honey-colored liquid to ripple. You raise it to your  lips, take a swig and feel the cacophony of flavors dance down your throat.  Let’s face it — cocktails are pure class. But there are many ways to enjoy posh potions on a budget.

First, stock your kitchen with an entourage of cheap-but-drinkable liquors and mixers. Next, procure simple syrup to sweeten your concoctions, or you can make your own by mixing one cup of water with one cup of sugar, boiling it and letting it cool. Now you’re ready to make a delectable three-ingredient cocktail. The preparation is a cinch — for each, mix the listed ingredients and add the recommended garnish. Enjoy, and remember: pinkies out!
